Psoralea Corylifolia

Psoralea Corylifolia, Bu Gu Zhi, (補骨脂) is actually refers to the seed of Psoralea corylifolia. The thin pericarp is hard to be peeled off from the testa. Inside there is one kernel and a pair of cotyledon, from light brown to yellowish-brown, and rich in oil. And it has a very light sweet smell and slightly bitter and pungent taste.*

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine: It is kidney meridian, warm, spicy, used to nourish the kidney; relieve asthma; warm the spleen and stop diarrhea; topical use for vitiligo; alopecia areata; psoriasis etc.

Psoralea Corylifolia works by stimulating the pituitary to release follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone which also triggers the release of estrogen by the reproductive organs. This is more of an indirect method of stimulating estrogen to act on the uterine lining.

It is reported to contain essential oil, coumarins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids.*
